use research: to help manage wetlands

The Kooragang Wetland Rehabilitation Project provides opportunities research into estuarine ecosystems.  In return we use much of that research to help guide and assess management actions and modify those actions if necessary to reflect current understandings of the estuarine ecosystem and biological priorities. We have strong links with several government departments and universities including: NSW Department Primary Industries, The University of Newcastle, Australian Catholic University and the University of Western Sydney.  Below is a selected list of research projects being undertaken at Kooragang Wetlands.  You can find more complete list of research undertaken at Kooragang Wetlands on the research page

Students assess a saltmarsh community.

Measurement of water salinity helps determine management strategies.

Student studies benthic invertebrates populations in mudflats and the relationship with shorebird populations.

NSW DPI (formerly NSW Fisheries monitors fish and crustacean populations at various sites to determine success of culvert removal.

  • Monitoring of a created intertidal wetland.
  • Effect of opening a culvert on bird and fish assemblages.
  • Effect of increased tidal flushing on Mosquito populations.
  • The relationship between hydrology and shorebird movement in a estuarine wetland at Newcastle NSW
  • Factors effecting GGBF habitat and the relationship between habitat salinity and protection from chytrid.
